The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution on July 31 to authorize a 26,000-strong joint African Union (AU)-UN peaeekeeping force in Darfur, Sudan. Under the resolution, the hybrid operation-also known as the third phase of tile Annan Plan peacekeeping program that was put forward by former UN Seeretury Geueral Kofi Annan--would be authorized for an initial period of 12 months. Shortly before this historical move, Beijing Review reporter Yan Wei talked to Liu Gnijin, Special Representative of the Chinese Govenunent for Darfur, about his vision for peace in the war-torn region.
