Following a high-profile search for Olympic emblem and mascot designs, organizers in Beijing are seeking public submissions in the design of a torch for the 2008 Summer Games.
In an attempt to attract international interest, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG) put out a global call for submissions in early December, setting an entry deadline of February 28.
Glory and dream, tradition and modernity, culture and harmony are the concepts for torch design, according to Zhang Ming, Deputy Director of BOCOGs Culture and Ceremonies Department. Design proposals for the Beijing Olympic torch are supposed to artistically interpret the rich connotation of the concepts, she said.
Submissions are also expected to display the distinguishing features of the Beijing Games, namely Chinese style, cultural splendor and contemporary spirit, and to demonstrate the vitality and passion of the torchbearers.
Zhang said anyone interested in submitting Olympic torch design ideas is welcome to contribute, and can download requisite forms and other documents from the official website, www.ʡ.
The organizing committee of the torch design proposal solicitation is also inviting specialized art or industrial design institutes as well as individual designers, including those involved in the torch designs for previous Games, to contribute their works, Zhang said.
BOCOG requires the proposed designs be original and creative, and the torch can be presented with state-of-the-art technology.
Each participant is allowed to submit a maximum of three proposals, and each proposal should include the following documents:
-- Core design plan with artists impression and three-view drawings of the proposed torch
-- Supplementary design plan with artists impression and three-view drawings of the cauldron, portable torch stand, flame canister, regulator and torch package on the basis of the core design plan
--l Elaboration of design concepts and exterior and interior structures of the Olympic torch, technical standards and parameters (including materials to be used, ways to open the torch, flame testing data)
-- Fuel system design, including designs for the fuel cradle, fueling canister, fuel ignition switch and safety system

The review committee, consisting of experts from home and abroad, will evaluate works collected and select 10 to be evaluated again. During the second round of review, the committee will choose three entries from the 10 and present them to the Beijing Executive Committee for the Olympic Games for a final decision.
After being proposed to the International Olympic Committee for approval, the final design will be officially unveiled in mid-2006. Designers of the top three picks will each be awarded 50,000 yuan (about $6,000).
According to Zhang, BOCOG has outlined an original route for the torch relay, but is waiting for the confirmation of cities along the route. According to an agreement between BOCOG and the International Olympic Committee, the two parties will not reveal any information about the route of the torch relay before the final decision is announced in early 2007.
It is reported that the 2008 Olympic torch will be lighted in Greeces Olympia, which is the cradle of the Olympic Games, and the relay route may cross Qomolangma (the Everest). The torch will be passed through many parts of China, as well as other regions around the world.
Before BOCOG launched the campaign to seek a design for the 2008 Olympic torch, Lin Zhong from Fuzhou, capital of Fujian, mailed his design, which is also regarded as the first one, to BOCOG.
