A Smile is A Gift That Anyone Can Give It costs nothing, but saves much. It eiches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give. It happens in a flash, and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None is so rich that he can get along without it; none so poor that he is not eiched by it. It creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in business, and is the countersign of friends. It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sick, and nature's best antidote for trouble. It cannot be bought, borrowed, or stolen, for it is no earthly good to anyone until it is given away. If you meet someone too burdened with grief or worry to smile, just give him one of yours. For nobody needs a smile so much as he who has none left to give.
Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust. Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite for what's next in the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young. When the aerials are down,
and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.
Nothing succeeds lacks confidence. When you are truly and justifiably confident, it radiates from you like sunlight, and attracts success to you like a magnet. It's important to believe in yourself. Believe that you can do it under any circumstances, because if you believe you can, then you really will. The belief keeps you searching for answers, which means that pretty soon you will get them. Confidence is more than an attitude. It comes from knowing exactly where you are going and exactly how you are going to get there. It comes from acting with integrity and confidence. It comes from a strong sense of purpose. It comes from a strong commitment to take responsibility, rather than just letting life happen. One way to develop self-confidence is to do the thing you fear and to get a record of successful experiences behind you. Confidence is compassionate and understanding. It is not arrogant. Arrogance is born out of fear and insecurity, while confidence comes from strength and integrity. Confidence is not just believing you can do it. Confidence is knowing you can do it.Know that you are capable of accomplishing anything you want, and live your life with confidence. Anything can be achieved through focused, determined effort and self-confidence. If your life is not what you want it to be,you have the power to change it,and you must make the changes on a moment by moment basis. Live your priorities. Live with your goals and your plan of action. Live each moment with your priorities in mind. Act with your own purpose, and you will have the life you want.

Look at us today! So many doors are open to us! I believe there have never been such abundant opportunities for self-development as we have today. The doors open to us also pose challenges. Each door is a test of our courage, ability and judgement, but with the support of my teachers, parents and friends, I believe I can meet the challenge head on.
---Excerpt from Hong Ye‘s speech
The other night, as I saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs. I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to something else, someplace else, a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seemed to have been except the deer. And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it‘s time for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.

Like many young people of my age in China, I want to see my country get prosperous and enjoy respect in the international community. But it seems to me that mere patriotism is not just enough. It is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking and broaden our minds to bigger issues.
---Excerpt from Sun Ning‘s speech
To us young people, challenge often emerges in the form of competition. In the next century, competition will not only come from other college graduates, but also from people of all ages, of all origins. With increasing international exchanges, we have to face growing-competition from the whole outside world. This is calling for a higher level of our personal development.
---Excerpt from Liu Xin‘s speech
A Chinese philosopher, Feng Youlan, once said China is an old country with a new life. To us, that means this country with a long, long history is on its course of modernization. I am encouraged every time I think of it. I do believe China really has a bright future, if it seeks this opportunity to continue building a road to the world. I see the future as a huge project in which I can play an important role. China needs more and better roads to the rest of the world. I feel needed. I feel inspired. I‘m ready.

We live at a critical juncture of our evolution because such problems as ethnic conflict and regional uest are increasingly posing a threat to peace and happiness of the whole human race. To cope with such an era and to embrace an even brighter future, we need to learn to live more harmoniously in a world community which is becoming smaller and smaller.

What happened to this beautiful valley in Australia should also happen to our Yellow River and, in fact, it is happening. I have seen farmers planting trees on mountains along the Yellow River. I have seen them climb the mountain tops with seeding on their shoulders because they had no machinery. I have seen them pour on trees the water they carried up in buckets from miles down the valley. These farmers are quietly nourishing our Yellow River, just as the river has nourished them. ---Excerpt from Cai Li‘s speech
If a person inherits his father‘s millions of dollars and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no
difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. The term "success", to be sure, will not sit still for easy definition. But as I understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor.

The first and foremost thing is to let people fall in love with the city at first sight, attracting them by its unique image. What image does Beijing intend to create for itself once it has the opportunity to host the 2008 Olympics? It is known to all that the Beijing Municipal Government has already set the theme for the future games: New Beijing, Great Olympics. For me, the 2008 Olympics will be a great green Olympics illuminated with two more special colors, yellow and red.

The adolescent girl from Tennessee is standing onthe stage of a drama summer camp in upstate New York. It's a beautiful day. But the girl doesn't feelbeautiful. She's not the leggy, glamorous Hollywoodtype. In fact, she describes herself as dorky.
Since she was six years old, Reese Witherspoon has wanted to be a country singer. And Dolly Parton is heridol. Butv this flat-chested wisp of a girl is no Dolly Parton.
Nevertheless, all of this summer she's been acting, dancing and singing---giving it her best.
Play to your strengths. If you're going to make it in this business, it's not going to be on sexy—that's not who you are. Better focus on what you're good at. Celebrate yourself.
Despite three years of lessons, at the end of camp her coaches tell her to forget aboutsinging. They suggest she think about another career. If Reese did have talent, it was hidingunder her skinny, mousy frame and her Coke-bottle glasses.
Still, she takes their words to heart. After all, why shouldn't she believe theprofessionals?
But back at home in Nashville, her mother — a funny, happy, upbeat person — wouldn't lether mope. Her father, a physician, encouraged her to achieve in school. So she worked hard ateverything and was accepted at Stanford University.
And at age 19, she got a part in a low-budget movie called Freeway. That led to asubstantial role in the movie Pleasantville. But her big break came with Legally Blonde.
Well, she decided,"if you can't sing and you aren't glamorous, play to your strengths. Ifyou're going to make it in this business, it's not going to be on sexy — that's not who you are.Better focus on what you've good at. Celebrate yourself." And then came the offer that took herback to her Nashville roots — playing the wife of tormented country star Johnny Cash. A singingrole.
All of a sudden the old fears were back. She was so nervous on the set, a reporter wrote, she&q
uot;kept a sick bucket" nearby and admitted she "would go backstage after a singing scene andshake." But she didn'tgive up on the movie or herself.
The humor and drive she learned at home overcame the self-doubt learned on that summer stage. Shespent 6 months taking singing lessons again. She learned to play the Autoharp. And the hard workbuilt up her confidence.
Last March, Reese Witherspoon walked up on another stage, the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, andaccepted the Oscar as Best Actress for her heartbreaking, heartwarming singing role as JuneCarter Cash in Walk the Line.
Finally, as you read thse accounts of Reese Witherspoon, consider the obstacles she met. Thelesson of the strory, I suppose, is that instead of making dozen excuses why you can not realizeyour dreams, think about this story, just hold to your dream and never give up.
