This passage discussed something about shame. Gregory, who never learned shame at home narrated two affairs he was ashamed of. The first thing is that fell in love with Helen, Gregory brushed his hair, washed his socks as well as shirt-the only one cloth he owned, shoveled the snow off her walk and so on. Poverty and dirty as he was, he still tried various methods, eager to make a good impression on the girl. However, in one class, his teacher ruthlessly broken his dream by directly pointing out that Gregory is such a child without father. More importantly, his face was lost in front of Helen. He was ashamed that he merely left a pathetic image and what he wanted to present were in vain. Consequently he was so embarrassed that he apparently perceived his self-esteem was severely frustrated. The second one is that he witnessed a wino was knocked by the owner of the restaurant for not paying money after eating food. The author didn’t offer any effective help until it was too late. Accordingly, he was ashamed of his untimely assistance. From these two experiences, the writer finally learned what called shame that he hadn’t been taught at home. From my perspective, when we encounter awkward things, feeling ashamed is a matter of course and there will be multifarious factors that will result in our embarrassments. When it comes to losing face in front of most people, we might feel disgraced; when it comes to being made fun of in public, we might feel humiliated; when it comes to failing to do what we should have done successfully, we might also feel ashamed from the bottom of heart. Nonetheless I think Shame is a way of improving ourselves. Only when we experience shame and regret in doing erroneous things, can we clearly see our shortcomings as well as what we haven’t done well. Having a sense of shame, we will be more disciplined in order to become a better man both in other people’s and our own eyes. On the contrary, if a man without shame, he may gradually lose himself. He can’t figure out which thing on earth is the wrong one that he should be ashamed of. Furthermore, if the entire society without shame, rules will no longer be observed. For example, pedestrians disturb the traffic order but are not ashamed. The world we live in will lose obvious criterion between right and wrong things. Everybody feels complacent about doing something wrong. In a nutshell, as Hegel had said, a sense of shame is the difference between a man and an animal. It is not only important but also necessary for all of us to learn shame, starting small. When we learn to discipline ourselves with shame, we will embrace a more orderly society.
