Affordable houses emerged in China dur-ing the process of the country"s housing reform. They were formally launched in 1998 and developed rapidly between 1999 and 2005, as a kind of housing relief for peo-ple in the low-income group. According to state regulations, buyers of affordable housesonly have limited ownership of their proper-ties, which cannot be resold within five years of the purchase.
