It is not my contention that chemical insecticides must never be used[1]. I do contend that we have put poisonous and biologically potent chemicals indiscriminately into the hands of persons largely or wholly ignorant of their potentials for harm[2]. We have subjected enormous numbers of people to contact with these poisons, without their consent and often without their knowledge[3]. If the Bill of Rights contains no guarantee that a citizen shall be secure against lethal poisons distributed either by private individuals or by public officials, it is surely only because our forefathers, despite their considerable wisdom and foresight, could conceive of no such problem[4].

I contend, furthermore, that we have allowed these chemicals to be used with little or no advance investigation of their effect on soil, water, wildlife and man himself[1]. Future generations are unlikely to condone our lack of prudent concern for the integrity of the natural world that supports all life[2]. There is still very limited awareness of the nature of the threat[1]. This is an era of specialists, each of whom sees his own problem and is unaware of or intolerant of the larger frame into which it fits[2]. It is also an era dominated by industry, in which the right to make a dollar at whatever cost is seldom challenged[3]. When the public protests, confronted with some obvious evidence of damaging results of pesticide applications, it is fed little tranquilizing pills of half truth[4]. We urgently need an end to these false assurances, to the sugar coating of unpalatable facts[5]. It is the public that is being asked to assume the risks that the insect controllers calculate[6]. The public must decide whether it wishes to continue on the present road, and it can do so only when in full possession of the facts[7]. 通過將自己翻譯的譯文與參考譯文進行對比，發(fā)現(xiàn)了自己的譯文存在很多不足，現(xiàn)主要從(1)四字詞組的使用 (2)句式結(jié)構(gòu)的調(diào)整(3)轉(zhuǎn)換法的應(yīng)用(4)引申法的應(yīng)用四個方面進行分析說明。

(1) 四字詞組的使用

原譯文中共有5處使用了四字詞組，而我的譯文中并未用到四字詞組，四字詞組的使用能夠使譯文言簡意賅，整齊勻稱，更使得譯文的節(jié)奏感增強。例如第一段第二句中的“indiscriminately”我譯為了“任意的”，而原譯文譯為了“不加區(qū)別”，第一段第四句中的“considerable wisdom and foresight”我譯為了“相當大的智慧與遠見”，原文譯為了“遠見卓識”，雖然我的譯文也基本表達了原文的含義，但相比原譯文不夠簡潔，遜色很多。因此，在今后翻譯過程中，應(yīng)該注意四字詞組的使用，為自己的譯文增色。

在對比過程中我發(fā)現(xiàn)自己的譯文中有多處句子拗口，不如原譯文自然流暢。例如第一段的第二句“I do contend that we have put poisonous and biologically potent chemicals indiscriminately into the hands of persons largely or wholly ignorant of their potentials for harm”，原譯文將該句譯成兩個句子，并且在翻譯形容詞短語“l(fā)argely or wholly ignorant of their potentials for harm”時，增加“他們”作主語，形容詞“ignorant”轉(zhuǎn)譯成動詞“不了解”，整句譯成“但我認為我們已把化學毒藥不加區(qū)別地置于某些人的手中，他們不甚了解或者全然不了解這些化學毒藥具有潛在的造成危害的能力�！蔽业淖g文卻生硬的按照原文的結(jié)構(gòu)進行了翻譯，譯為了“但我認為我們已把化學毒藥不加區(qū)別地置于某些人的手中，他們不甚了解或者全然不了解這些化學毒藥具有潛在的造成危害的能力。”顯然原譯文更符合中文的表達，并且原譯文在翻譯過程中進行了詞性轉(zhuǎn)換及增譯，使得譯文語意更加通順。

又如第二段的第二句，“Future generations are unlikely to condone our lack of prudent concern for the integrity of the natural world that supports all life”原譯文使用了増譯法，根據(jù)語意將原文后半句譯為一個條件句，而我的譯文卻直接按原文的句式結(jié)構(gòu)翻譯，雖然意思基本表達清楚，但未考慮到語言差異，對句子進行結(jié)構(gòu)的調(diào)整。同樣的問題還有第一段第二句、第三段第一句、第三段第三句、第三段第七句。

因此，在今后翻譯過程中，翻譯完的句子一定要再看一下它是否符合中文的表達習慣，適當?shù)倪M行結(jié)構(gòu)的調(diào)整，使得譯文更加的通順流暢。

(3) 詞類轉(zhuǎn)換法的應(yīng)用

在對比中發(fā)現(xiàn)雖然我的譯文中也有幾處使用到了詞類轉(zhuǎn)換，但不如原文通順的原因還有詞類轉(zhuǎn)換用的不夠嫻熟，例如，我的譯文中第一段第三句中，“without their knowledge”中的“knowledge” 轉(zhuǎn)譯為了動詞“了解”，原譯文也轉(zhuǎn)譯為了動詞“知道”。

原文中大量使用了詞類轉(zhuǎn)換法，例如，第二段第一句“I contend, furthermore, that we have allowed these chemicals to be used with little or no advance investigation of their effect on soil, water, wildlife and man himself”，將介詞短語“with little or no advance investigation of their effect on soil, water, wildlife and man himself”轉(zhuǎn)換為動詞，譯為“卻并未調(diào)查或很少調(diào)查它們對土壤、水、野生動物和人類本身有什么影響”，又如第二段第二句中，原譯文將“ lack of prudent concern for”中的“concern”轉(zhuǎn)譯為動詞，譯為“不認真的關(guān)心”，而我譯為了名詞“缺少周全的考慮”。

通過詞類轉(zhuǎn)換的對比，我發(fā)現(xiàn)了在準確理解原文含義的基礎(chǔ)上，靈活運用詞類轉(zhuǎn)換會使得譯文更加得體大方。

(4) 引申法的應(yīng)用

在這一點上值得可喜的是，雖然沒有原譯文中使用的多，我的譯文也運用了引申法，例如第三段第三句“It is also an era dominated by industry, in which the right to make a dollar at whatever cost is seldom challenged”中的“challenge”我引申為了“質(zhì)疑”，原譯文引申為了“過問”。又如第三段第四句中的“it is fed little tranquilizing pills of half truth”我根據(jù)上下文引申為了“就會給他們吃一些能夠使他們鎮(zhèn)定下來的小藥丸”，原譯文也進行了引申，譯為“就給他們吃一些用半真半假的話制作的小藥丸，使他們鎮(zhèn)靜下來”。再如第三段第六句“It is the public that is being asked to assume the risks that the insect controllers calculate”中的 “calculate”我引申為了“造成”，原譯文引申為了“設(shè)置”。

從整體來說，我的譯文大體表達了原文的意思，但是明顯不如原譯文翻譯的通順流暢，因此在今后的翻譯中需要注意中外文化差異，適當進行結(jié)構(gòu)調(diào)整，運用課上學到的翻譯方法，爭取使自己的翻譯取得進步。
