To us young people, challenge often emerges in the form of competition. In the next century, competition will not only come from other college graduates, but also from people of all ages, of all origins. With increasing international exchanges, we have to face growing-competition from the whole outside world. This is calling for a higher level of our personal development.
---Excerpt from Liu Xin's speech
A Chinese philosopher, Feng Youlan, once said China is an old country with a new life. To us, that means this country with a long, long history is on its course of modernization. I am encouraged every time I think of it. I do believe China really has a bright future, if it seeks this opportunity to continue building a road to the world. I see the future as a huge project in which I can play an important role. China needs more and better roads to the rest of the world. I feel needed. I feel inspired. I'm ready.

We live at a critical juncture of our evolution because such problems as ethnic conflict and regional uest are increasingly posing a threat to peace and happiness of the whole human race. To cope with such an era and to embrace an even brighter future, we need to learn to live more harmoniously in a world community which is becoming smaller and smaller.

What happened to this beautiful valley in Australia should also happen to our Yellow River and, in fact, it is happening. I have seen farmers planting trees on mountains along the Yellow River. I have seen them climb the mountain tops with seeding on their shoulders because they had no machinery. I have seen them pour on trees the water they carried up in buckets from miles down the valley. These farmers are quietly nourishing our Yellow River, just as the river has nourished them.

If a person inherits his father's millions of dollars and leads an easy life, he is not a
successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. The term "success", to be sure, will not sit still for easy definition. But as I understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor.

The first and foremost thing is to let people fall in love with the city at first sight, attracting them by its unique image. What image does Beijing intend to create for itself once it has the opportunity to host the 2008 Olympics? It is known to all that the Beijing Municipal Government has already set the theme for the future games: New Beijing, Great Olympics. For me, the 2008 Olympics will be a great green Olympics illuminated with two more special colors, yellow and red.

Like many young people of my age in China, I want to see my country get prosperous and enjoy respect in the international community. But it seems to me that mere patriotism is not just enough. It is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking and broaden our minds to bigger issues.
---Excerpt from Sun Ning's speech
The other night, as I saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs. I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to something else, someplace else, a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seemed to have been except the deer. And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it's time for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.
---Excerpt from Gu Qiubei's speech
Look at us today! So many doors are open to us! I believe there have never been such abundant opportunities for self-development as we have today. The doors open to us also pose challenges. Each door is a test of our courage, ability and judgement, but with the support of my teachers, parents and friends, I believe I can meet the challenge head on.
---Excerpt from Hong Ye's speech
The Force of Habits
Habits, whether good or bad, are gradually formed. The more we do a thing, the more we tend to like doing it; and if we do not continue to do it, we feel uncomfortable. This is called the force of habits, and the force of habits should be fought against.
This applies even to such good things as work or rest. Some people form a bad habit of working too much, and others of idling too much. Bad habits, once formed, are difficult to get rid of.
The wise man always remembers to check any bad habit. He warns himself “I am now becoming idle” or “I like too many sweets” or “I smoke too much”. And then adds, “I will get myself out of this bad habit at once.”

Nowadays the newspaper possesses considerable value .Everybody should read it. It supplies us with a variety of news every day. It tells us the political situation of the world. If we form the habit of reading the
newspaper, we shall (will) get enough knowledge to cope with our circumstances.
第二天:MY DAILY LIFE我的日常生活
Though my daily life is extremely monotonous, I try hard to adapt myself to it. Why? Because I intend to
be a good student. I wish to render service to my country.
I get up at six o’clock every day. After I wash my face and brush my teeth, I begin to review my lessons. I
go to school at seven o’clock.
After school is over, I return home. We usually have supper at seven o’clock. Then I begin to do my
homework. I want to finish it before I go to bed.
Do you mind being called a bad student? Of course not. So far as I know, everybody intends to be (become)
a model student.
However, to be a model student is by no means an easy thing. First, he must do his best to obtain knowledge.
A man without sufficient knowledge will not succeed. Secondly, he must remember to improve his health. Only a strong man can do great tasks. Thirdly, he should receive moral education. If his conduct is not good, no one will
consider making friends with him.
第四天:HOW TO GET HAPPINESS 如何獲得快樂
There is no doubt that happiness is the most precious thing in the world. Without it, life will be empty and meaningless. If you wish to know how to get happiness, you must pay attention to the following two points. First, health is the secret of happiness (the key to happiness). Only a strong man can enjoy the pleasure of life. Secondly, happiness consists in contentment. A man who is dissatisfied with his present condition is always in distress.
As i
s well known, books teach us to learn life, truth, science and many other useful things. They increase our knowledge, broaden our minds and strengthen our character. In other words, they are our good teachers andwise friends. This is the reason why our parents always encourage us to read more books.
Reading is a good thing, but we must pay great attention to the choice of books. It is true that we can derive
benefits from good books. However, bad books will do us more harm than good.
A TRIP TO THE COUNTRY 鄉(xiāng)村游記
One Sunday my mother (Mother) had (made) me take my little young brother to a trip to the country. She
bade me take good care of him.
While we were walking along the road, the sun was shining brightly and the breeze was blowing gently. We saw the beautiful flowers smile (smiling) at us and heard the birds sing (singing) their sweet songs on the trees.
The scenery was indeed very pretty (beautiful).
When we felt tired, we returned home. We saw Mother (our mother) wait (waiting) for us at the door.
It is the duty of every citizen to make the country rich and powerful (To make the country rich and strong is...). In order to accomplish this object one must be patriotic (love his country). I consider this an unchangeable
truth.
How can a student love his country (be patriotic)? I find my answer very simple and clear. He must study hard and store up knowledge so as to serve his (the) country in the future. If every student can do according to
what I said, the country will certainly be rich and powerful.
A New York woman has told how she got a piece of platinum jewelry inserted in her eye to set herself apart from the crowd even though the American Academy of Ophthalmology warns against the procedure. //Kristina Kovalevskya is the first New Yorker to visit Dr Emil at Park Avenue Laser Vision to get a 'cute' heart-shaped sequin, measuring 3.5mm, placed on the white of her of right eye ball. //'I’m a person who likes extremes...I want to keep it in my eye as long as possible. I like it, but I’m planning to swap it out. I really want to try a new design. Every girl wants to try something new,' she told Blackbook. //According to Dr Chynn the eye jewelry procedure has been done hundreds of times in Europe and in Los Angeles, but never before in New York. Ms Kovalevskaya was one of his first clients.
2. Life is good
Life is difficult, life is unfair, life is challenging and sometimes painful. And life is so very good. There are frustrations, tragedies, disappointments, setbacks, heartbreaks, and absurdities. The simple joy of being outweighs them all.
Life is good, because within its realm, anything is possible. Life is good, because no matter how far you fall, there is always a way to climb back up again. You can complain, fret and worry about all the problems in your life, but you’ll be wasting your time. Or, you can choose to focus on why and how life is so good, and on what you can do to take that goodness and make it even better.
Not only is life good, it’s uniquely good for you in your very own way. The possibilities for expressing your purpose are limited only by your imagination.
Remind yourself often of the great and wonderful value that you already, always have. Life is good, and in this moment that’s bursting with possibilities, life is yours.
3. Better to do it right
It’s tempting to compromise and take a shortcut. It’s better to do it right.
What’s the point of giving, when you give less than you’re capable of giving? If you’ve decided something is worth doing, then it’s worth doing in the best way you know how.
If you seek to cheat life, you end up cheating yourself. Choose instead to deliver more than you promise, and even if no one else notices, it is still worth all the effort. Because one very important person will notice. That person is you.
Your own authentic perception of yourself is far more important to you than what anyone else thinks. Living with absolute integrity is what will raise that perception to its highest level.
Life is too precious and too full of positive possibilities to cheat yourself out of even a moment of it. You owe it to yourself to do it right.
4. That all great art has this power of suggesting a world beyond is undeniable. In some moods, nature shares it. There is no sky in June so blue that it does not point forward to a bluer, no sunset so beautiful that it does not wake the vision of a greater beauty, a vision which passes before it is fully glimpsed, and in passing leaves an indefinable longing and regret. But, if this world is not merely a bad joke, life a vulgar flare amid the cool radiance of the stars, and existence an empty laugh braying across the mysteries, if these intimations of a something behind and beyond are not evil
humor born of indigestion, or whimsies sent by the devil to mock and madden us, if, in a word, beauty means something, yet we must not seek to interpret the meaning. If we glimpse the unutterable thing, it is unwise to try to utter it, nor should we seek to invest with significance that which we cannot grasp. Beauty is in the terms of human meanings is meaningless.
5. Reading Good Books
Devote some of your leisure, I repeat, to cultivating a love of reading good books. Fortunate indeed are those who contrive to make themselves genuine book-lovers. For book lovers have some noteworthy advantages over other people. They need never know lonely hours so long as they have books around them, and the better the books the more delightful the company. From good books, moreover, they draw much besides entertainment. They gain mental food such as few companions can supply. Even while resting from their labors they are, through the books they read, equipping themselves to perform those labors more efficiently. This albeit may not be deliberately reading to improve their mind. All unconsciously the ideas they derive from the printed paged are stored up, to be worked over by the imagination for future profit. (From Self-Development By Hey Addington Bruce)
6. On Etiquette
Etiquette to society is what apparel is to the individual. Without apparel men would go in shameful nudity which would surely lead to the corruption of morals; and without etiquette society would be in a pitiable state and the necessary intercourse between its members would be interfered with by needless offences and troubles. If society were a train, the etiquette would be the rails along which only the train could rumble forth; if society were a state coach, the etiquette would be the wheels and axis on which only the coach could roll forward. The lack of proprieties would make the most intimate friends turns to be the most decided enemies and the friendly or allied countries declare war against each other. We can find many examples in the history of mankind. Therefore I advise you to stand on ceremony before anyone else and to take pains not to do anything against etiquette lest you give offences or make enemies. By William Hazlitt
7. An Hour Before Suise
An hour before suise in the city there is an air of cold. Solitary desolation about the noiseless streets, which we are accustomed to see thronged at other times by a busy, eager crowd, and over the quiet, closely shut buildings which throughout the day are warming with life. The drunken, the dissipated, and the criminal have disappeared; the more sober and orderly part of the population have not yet awakened to the labors of the day, and the stillness of death is over streets; its very hue seems to be imparted to them, cold and lifeless as they look in the gray, somber light of daybreak. A partially opened bedroom window here and there bespeaks the heat of the weather and the uneasy slumbers of its occupant; and the dim scanty flicker of a light through the blinds of yonder windows denotes the chamber of watching and sickness. Save for that sad light, the streets present no signs of life, nor the houses of habitation. (From Boz By Charles Dickens)
